CONRAD - Six open weights in the lineup left the South Hamilton wrestling team with very little chance of competing for team wins at Saturday's Storm Duals, but that wasn't the primary goal for the Hawks anyway.
"There are different levels of success and winning and losing dual meets is one, but we knew that wasn't going to be an option (on Saturday)," South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said after his team went 1-3 and placed seventh. "We looked at it as each guy trying to improve progress is what we're striving for right now."
South Hamilton dropped duals to Mason City Newman (51-21), West Marshall (54-19) and Iowa Falls-Alden (45-28). Its lone win came in the seventh-place bout over Rockford (42-23).
The Hawks didn't have wrestlers at 106, 120, 160, 182, 195 and 220 pounds. Brodie opted to bump several of his wrestlers up a weight and they thrived.
Seventh-ranked (Class 1A) 132-pounder JD Rader stayed unbeaten on the season with four wins at 138. Luke Peters and Austin Roys both went up a class and put together 3-1 days at 145 and 152, respectively. Josh Lutter (285) was also 3-1.
Rader racked up a fall, technical fall, major decision and win by injury default.
