JEWELL - The performances on the mat were more than good enough to get the South Hamilton wrestling team a pair of dual victories here last night, but a slew of open weights forced the Hawks to settle for a split against Heart of Iowa Conference rivals Greene County and North Polk.
South Hamilton won six of 10 matches against Greene County in a 30-25 victory, but couldn't overcome the forfeits it issued despite holding a 6-3 edge on the mat in a 40-39 loss to North Polk.
"I thought the effort was definitely there," South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. "I was happy we matched up well with Greene County and I thought we wrestled extremely hard against their quality team. They have an extraordinary lineup besides the holes."
The Hawks were helped by double forfeits at 182, 195 and 106 pounds against the Rams. But North Polk picked up 24 free points on four forfeits and gave up just two; the 12 points obviously made all the difference in a one-point dual.
"North Polk was just the reverse," Brodie said. "They kind of ran the gauntlet and they got off to a really good start, and we just didn't have enough to catch up."
South Hamilton never trailed against Greene County. Austin Roys (145) opened the dual with an 11-9 sudden-victory decision over Abe Yoder, and Max Reiter (160), Brady Clabaugh (170), and Josh Lutter all decked their opponents to help the Hawks open up a 21-9 lead.

North Polk scored the opening 28 points and stayed in front the entire dual against South Hamilton. A pin by Lutter got the Hawks on the board and they rolled up 30 teams points in the final five weights courtesy of falls by Luke Peters (138), Roys and Jordan Toillion (152), and forfeits for Brian Greenfield (126) and Rader.
Cory Clabaugh also grabbed a win against the Comets; he claimed a 7-4 decision over Jace Erickson.
"I was very proud of Cory Clabaugh for his effort against North Polk," Brodie said. "It's something I haven't seen from him until this point in the season."
South Hamilton will travel to Conrad on Saturday to take part in the BCLUW Duals. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
