SOUTH HAMILTON HOOPS BRIEFS

Huge second quarter, Hill’s big night propel Hawks

January 8, 2014
The Daily Freeman Journal

STORY CITY - A 23-3 second quarter run put the South Hamilton boys' basketball team in the driver's seat and the Hawks withstood a fourth-quarter run by Roland-Story to beat the Norsemen, 73-62, in Heart of Iowa Conference action here last night.

Freshman standout Collin Hill was in the zone early, as he scored 17 of his team-high 23 points in the first half to help the Hawks (7-2, 7-1 HOIC) build a 40-19 cushion.

Trailing 58-37 after three quarters, Roland-Story (5-3, 5-2) closed to as close as five, 67-62, but a crucial 3-point bucket by South Hamilton senior Trevor Ullestad moments later swung the momentum back in the Hawks' favor. Zach Puls and Hill then hit free throws to put the Norsemen away.

Ullestad rained in three triples and netted 11 points. Fellow guard Matt Hislop checked in with 13 points and four assists, and Ross Enderson gave the Hawks a fourth double-digit scorer with 10 points to go along with three steals.

Enderson canned a pair of 3-pointers.

Roland-Story's Zach Hovick led all scorers with 25 points. Ben Clark chipped in 16.

R-S girls pull away in final quarter, beat Hawks 38-25

STORY CITY - Trailing by just two possessions in the fourth quarter, the South Hamilton girls' basketball team was unable to climb all the way back in a 38-25 Heart of Iowa Conference loss to rival Roland-Story here last night.

The Norse (3-6, 3-5 HOIC) eventually went on to outscore the Hawks (1-9, 1-8 HOIC) 13-5 in the fourth quarter after leading 25-19 at the end of three periods.

"(Roland-Story) got some momentum in the first couple of minutes of the fourth quarter and we didn't respond," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "When it was our turn to score, we had too many turnovers to compete."

Four of South Hamilton's nine field goals came from outside the 3-point arc. Kaitlin Fisher had one and she finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Savana Stangeland netted six points to go along with 10 rebounds and three assists.

Natalie Vance (11), Brooke Staker (11) and Brittany Hammes (10) all scored in double figures for Roland-Story.
