Monte Headley, a long time Jewell area resident, died Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Story City surrounded by his family. Funeral services are at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Jewell. Burial will follow the funeral at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation is Wednesday, January 1, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is caring for Monte and his family.
Marshall LeRoy Headley was born March 2, 1946 in Ames to Kenneth Eugene and Vera Jean (Schmedika) Headley. He grew in the Jewell area and was baptized and confirmed at the Federated Church in Jewell. Monte graduated from South Hamilton High School in 1964 and then attended A.I.B. in Des Moines. On August 16, 1975, Monte married Susan Lynn Hanson at the Presbyterian Church in Kamrar. Monte was the Public Works Director for the City of Jewell from April of 1979 to January of 1999. He was a dispatcher for ShoDust Transportation of Randall and then was the Warehouse Foreman for Sevde Moving and Storage in Ames from the fall of 2000 until retiring in the spring of 2007.
Monte was a member of Jewell Fire and Rescue for 30 years, retiring in March of 2010, serving as treasurer from December 1993 to December 2004. He was a member of the Jewell United Church of Christ and served as Council Board President.
Monte is survived by his wife, Sue of Jewell; a daughter, Jennifer Titus of Jewell; a son, Nathan (Amanda) Headley of Perry; grandchildren, Brittany, Alex, Adam, Taylor, and Mason; and his brother, Michael (Marsha) of Minnesota and Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Angie in 1984.
