Lynx girls dial up seven 3s, not enough in loss to Humboldt

Wagoner buries three triples, scores 11; Lynx go into break at 0-7

HUMBOLDT - The Webster City girls' basketball team found their stride from behind the 3-point arc here Friday night, but an eight-point disadvantage at the free throw line was ultimately the difference in a North Central Conference loss to Humboldt.

The Wildcats knocked down 13 of 22 shots at the charity stripe and hung on late to send the Lynx into the holiday break with a 48-44 loss.

WCHS (0-7, 0-6 NCC) drained seven 3-pointers. Sophomore Chelsey Wagoner canned three and scored a team-high 11 points. Gabbi Hoversten scored all six of her points from long distance, and Lynne Chalfant and Cassidy Bultena both had one.

"I really think that (the players) believed they could compete and win, and that was a huge thing," WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. "Offensively they moved the ball well and gave each other open opportunities. They weren't rushing their shots so much and that helped."

Ahead 25-24 at the half, Humboldt (3-4, 3-3 NCC) outscored WCHS 9-4 in the third quarter to build a six-point cushion, 34-28. The Wildcats led 47-41 with one minute remaining; Hoversten's second triple tightened the score, but the Lynx could get no closer than three.

Kessa Kuyper tallied 14 points and Lauren Friesth had 11 for the Wildcats.
