Not sent from city hall

Official-looking water line insurance letter popping up in Webster City

November 15, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

Several area residents have received what appears to be official letters from the city pertaining to the need to purchase water line insurance. City officials stressed that the letters are from a private company and not the city.

"The last time we saw these was about three years ago and they seemed to have targeted senior citizens," said City Manager Ed Sadler. "This time, they are targeting everyone and some people seem to think the letter is from us."

The letter offers insurance covering the water line from the street to the house.

"It's disturbing that it looks like its official and I think they are scaring people," he said.

While local residents are certainly free to accept the company's offer, Sadler said the insurance appeared to be fairly narrow in its scope.

"A break can be fairly costly, but they don't happen all that often," he said.
