Plans set for Veterans Day events

A series of ceremonies and services are planned all across Hamilton County on Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

In Webster City, members of the American Legion Post No. 191 will conduct an observance on Monday, beginning at about 10:40 a.m. on the Boulevard of Valor on South Des Moines St. in front of the Webster City Middle School.

Legionnaires will gather with members of the public and students from the middle school for the service. Legion Commander Ron Keigan will open the ceremony with a welcome to those attending. Chaplin Bruce Johnston will lead the opening and closing prayers.

Webster City area veterans gathered last Veterans Day with middle school students at the Boulevard of Valor. This year’s observance will be held Monday at about 10:40 a.m. in front of the Middle School. The public is encouraged to attend.

The guest speaker at the ceremony is Pat Powers, KQWC news director.

Following the speech, a 21-gun salute will be fired by Post 191's firing squad, taps will be played and the city sirens will sound for one minute and a prayer will conclude this year's event.

In case of bad weather, the observance will be moved inside to Jefferson Gym.

Throughout the day, legion members will visit eighth grade students to share their military experiences.

Legion members, guests and veterans are invited to attend the traditional oyster stew, chili and bean soup meal at Post 191 Headquarters, 726 Second St., beginning at 5 p.m.

Jewell observance

At South Hamilton School in Jewell, there will be a service at 9 a.m.in the gym. Music will be provided by the high school band and chorus.

Blairsburg ceremony

Northeast Hamilton Schools will observe Veterans Day on Monday with a ceremony in the school gym at 2 p.m.

The Williams American Legion Post 633 will post the Colors and musical selections will be performed by the NEH band.

First Sgt. Price Moberly of Williams will be the keynote speaker. Moberly, a 1981 graduate of Webster City High School, is with the Iowa Army National Guard, is the 1SG, Alpha Company, 1-133 in Dubuque.

Display open Sunday

A Veterans Day open house will be held Sunday at the Wilson Brewer Park, Museums and Visitor Center at the corner of Ohio and Superior Streets.

The Depot building will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on that day. Other buildings on the grounds will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., weather permitting.

The Depot building will feature the Military Room with displays of many generations of military artifacts and memorabilia. Also on display will be the Native American exhibit and an exhibit celebration Webster City's 100 years of Boy Scouting. This will be the last chance to view the Boy Scout display, officials said. Sunday will also mark the last open day of the season for the Depot and historial buildings.
