Cemeteries offer strong leads for genealogy searches

October is Family History Month

October 27, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

Researching family history will eventually lead to a local cemetery to remember and honor family members that lived before you.

Hamilton County has 30 well-maintained cemeteries - the final resting place for more than 2,000 veterans from all branches of the service and all wars and conflicts from the American Revolution to the present.

As America prepares to honor its Veterans on November 11th, U.S. flags are being placed on all Hamilton County veteran grave sites.

This year, America is also commemorating the Battle of Gettysburg, often called the turning point of the Civil War. Did you know there are over 230 Civil War Union Veterans and one Confederate Veteran buried in Hamilton County cemeteries?

Begin your family history research with the local genealogical society, the Hamilton Heritage Hunters. Meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday in April through November. Winter meetings are on the fourth Saturday at 1:30 p.m. January through March. Meetings are held at the Kendall Young Library in Webster City.
