Tough day for No. 8 Lynx at Johnston Invite

October 21, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

JOHNSTON - Eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Webster City faced arguably its toughest competition of the season and that caused some bumps in the road at Saturday's Johnston Invitational.

The Lynx (23-9) claimed just one victory - 2-1 over Roland-Story (14-25, 25-15, 15-6) - and dropped four decisions.

Fourth-ranked (5A) Urbandale (21-15, 23-21), Ames (19-21, 21-16, 15-8), Waukee (21-15, 21-18) and 13th-ranked (4A) Newton (25-19, 19-25, 15-11) all knocked off the Lynx.

"There was just a lack of focus at certain times of the day that killed us," WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. "We had some good moments where we did a lot of really good things and we were able to compete against all of the teams we went up against, but we had a little lack of focus behind the service line and our serve receive wasn't as accurate as it usually is.

"This tournament is always tough competition and you've got to give credit to the teams that are there. This time they were able to come out on top."

WCHS smacked 95 kills, but hit just .184 as a team in 282 chances. Kaylee Schnathorst piled up 33 kills, while Morgan Gourley and Hannah Myers both laced 21.
