No. 8 Hawk girls dominate at R-S Invite

All 5 scorers run fastest races of season; Lucas leads pack

September 27, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

STORY CITY - The flat, fast track at River Bend Golf Course was the reward for the South Hamilton girls' cross country team yesterday after the Hawks endured the rough, hilly terrain at Monday's Humboldt Invitational.

And the No. 8-ranked (Class 1A) Hawks thrived.

All five scoring runners turned in their best times of the season at the Roland-Story Invitational and South Hamilton dominated en route to a 22-point victory. The Hawks had five runners in the top 15 and posted 40 points, 22 ahead of runner-up Green County (62) and 44 in front of third-place finisher Roland-Story (84).

"I thought we ran really well, but very honestly we still looked tired from Monday," South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. "We got out and started well and then we had some good finishes."

Kayla Lucas broke the 16-minute barrier for the first time this season and coasted in with a silver-medal showing in 15:59 on the 4K course.

Meghan Fisher (16:34) and MaKayla Monthei (16:48) both cracked the top 10 as well; they played sixth and eighth, respectively.
