Redhawks unleash power, blank Trojets in ISC opener

September 13, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

BLAIRSBURG - A single blocker didn't work, and the double block was just as ineffective.

There just wasn't anything Northeast Hamilton could do to slow down North Tama middle hitter Josie Youel here last night in the Iowa Star Conference opener for both teams. Youel, a 5-foot-10 senior, plastered the ball and propelled the Redhawks to a three-set sweep, 25-13, 25-17, 25-10.

"They're just a good team. They don't get shaken and they hit hard from every position," Northeast Hamilton head coach Kacey Pruismann said of the Redhawks, who won their sixth straight match and seventh in their last eight outings. "(Youel) is a great middle hitter and she sees the court really well. We double-blocked, but she was able to go around us."

Northeast Hamilton setter Lillian Chamness adds a dig to her stat line last night during the Trojets’ 3-0 loss to North Tama in an Iowa Star Conference match.

North Tama (10-3, 1-0 ISC) took advantage of numerous Trojet mistakes in the first and third sets. Northeast Hamilton (2-6, 0-1 ISC) stayed competitive in the middle set, but a slew of service errors allowed the Redhawks to stay a step ahead.

"I felt like we just beat ourselves with too many mistakes in the first and third sets," Pruismann said. "I would say if we cut our missed serves in that (second set), I think we could have gotten that one and hopefully changed the momentum."

NEH gave away six free points on missed serves in the match against just four aces, three coming from Lillian Chamness.

Andi Anderson provided pop at the net with five kills in the loss. Kaylee Massman again showed her versatility with three kills and five assists. Chamness distributed six assists and came up with five digs.

Anderson was also the defensive leader with six digs. Taylor Olson added five and Jaidyn Timm finished with four.

NEH will attempt to end a three-match skid on Saturday when it takes part in the Lynx Invitational in Webster City. Play will begin at 9 a.m.

"I liked the way we attacked (against North Tama) more than I did against Southeast Webster-Grand," Pruismann said. "If we can keep that going then we should be able to compete with some of the teams on Saturday."
