WEBSTER CITY - Michael McBride's ascent in mixed martial arts is about to go national.
Webster City's homegrown talent will put his unbeaten professional record in the cage on the line against once-beaten Emmanuel Sanchez in a 155-pound lightweight fight on Friday, Oct. 25 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The card, which is being promoted by Resurrection Fighting Alliance, will be televised to a national audience on AXS TV, formerly known as HDNet.
Sanchez (4-1), who fights out of the Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee, Wis., dropped his last fight by unanimous decision to Lewis Gonzalez on May 3. Prior to the setback he won four straight bouts, two by way of submission.
"We should be really equally matched," McBride, who admits this will be the toughest fight of his career, said. "He's a renowned kickboxer, so he'll be tough. It should be good."
McBride (4-0) last entered the cage on June 14 and made quick work of Doug Jenkins in the main event at the Midwest Cage Championship's MCC 48: McBride vs. Jenkins. McBride put Jenkins to sleep in the second round with an arm choke.
McBride has stopped all four of his pro opponents via submission. No one has pushed him past the second round.
Both fighters were also unbeaten as amateurs.
Roufusport MMA Academy is the home gym of current UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. McBride spent some time at the gym recently, although he says he never crossed paths with Sanchez.
"I don't think I trained with him when I was there, but I definitely remember seeing him," McBride said.
