Exercise your brain @ KYL

Off the Shelf

September 6, 2013
Angie Martin-Schwarze - Director, Kendall Young Library , The Daily Freeman Journal

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, the perfect time to sign up for or use your library card, the smartest card in your wallet. Your Kendall Young library card can help you exercise your brain, whether through reading the newest book in your favorite series, watching the latest Academy Award winning movie from our DVD collection, or learning more about your favorite subject from our nonfiction collection.

Library cards offer more than just the collections in our building. With your library card, you can also access our online databases that range from the Transparent Language program (language-learning software with over 100 languages) to eBooks through NEIBORS and digital magazines through Zinio. These are services that would normally be inaccessible without paying a hefty fee; with your Kendall Young Library card they are free for you to use. Visit the eLibrary section of www.kylib.org to find out more. Don't have a computer to take advantage of these digital services? Your library card takes care of that as well. With our public access computers, your library card is your ticket to a computer, the internet, and vital software programs such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Excel.

To celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month, we have a variety of activities planned for all ages. Since September is also Nation Chicken Month, we have invited Murray McMurray Hatchery to present a program about the Hatchery and backyard chickens on Thursday, September 12 at 6:30pm. Continuing with the "month" celebrations, we will show the movie Silver Linings Playbook in conjunction with National Recovery Month on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. Viewers are invited to stay after the showing for a discussion of the film.

Our new program for teens in grades 6-12, Teen Lounge, started this month and will continue on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. The next session of Storytimes and afterschool programs for children begins the second week of September. Also, a special Movement Class for children ages 4 years 5th grade will take place on Monday, September 23 at 3:45. For adults, a Fit for Life class led by certified fitness instructor Leah Feltz will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. See our website at www.kylib.org for our full calendar of events

As an added bonus for the month of September, you can enter to win one of three Grand Prize Gift Baskets every time you use your library card. Plus, if you complete five activities from our activity calendar (available at the library), you can receive an additional entry.

Finally, for those that don't have a library card yet, don't worry! September is the perfect chance to stop by and sign-up. There are no fees to sign up for a card; simply bring in a picture ID with proof of your current address. We hope to see you soon.
