Elaine Van Langen, 83, Jewell

Elaine Van Langen, age 83, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church near Kamrar. Burial will follow at the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation is Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Elaine Albertha Rigter was born November 7, 1929, at the farm home near Kamrar to Joe and Jessie (Koop) Rigter. She grew up in the Kamrar area, and was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church near Kamrar. Following graduation from Kamrar High School, Elaine attended the University of Northern Iowa. She worked at Hahne Printing in Webster City, and was a school secretary for the Kamrar school. On June 1, 1950, Elaine married Alvin Van Langen at the First Presbyterian Church near Kamrar.

Elaine was an accomplished seamstress, sewing many wedding dresses and attendant's gowns. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kamrar, and taught Sunday School, Bible School, and was a circle member. Elaine was a 4-H Leader and enjoyed bowling league and women's and couples' golf. She enjoyed her fellowship time at morning coffee groups. Elaine was also involved with P.E.O. and the Lord's Cupboard in Jewell. As a 26 year cancer survivor, she was the honorary chairperson for Hamilton County Relay for Life in 2013.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Alvin of Jewell; daughters, Joan (Keith) Gelder of Jewell, Beverly (Gerald) Huisman of Webster City, and Patricia (Jerry) Ober of Story City; grandchildren, Brian (Mindy) Gelder, Steven (Lindsay) Gelder, Jeremy (Chelsea) Huisman, Ashley (David) Arellano, and Alyssa (Matthew) Halbach; great grandchildren, Sydney and Wyatt Gelder, and Hannah Arellano; brothers, Raymond Rigter of Williams and Joel (Joan) Rigter of Charleston, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Jo Ann Rigter, and sister-in-law, Orpha Rigter.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Hamilton County.
