Fielder leads 3 all-NCC players for Lynx

WEBSTER CITY - Year by year, Dylan Fielder has added power at the plate for the Webster City baseball team.

A singles hitter as a freshman turned into a doubles hitter with the occasional long ball during his sophomore stint. And this summer, as a junior, he was a threat to send the ball into orbit whenever he made contact.

The coaches in the North Central Conference took notice.

Webster City’s Dylan Fielder slides safely into the plate as Algona catcher Tyler Frideres awaits the throw during a game at Lynx Field in June. Both players were named to the all-North Central Conference first team, it was announced today.

Fielder was named to the 16-player all-NCC first team that was selected by the coaches, it was announced today. His Lynx teammates Ben Mossman and Trey Tesdahl, also juniors, were second-team selections.

Fielder was particularly good against conference opponents. He hit .390 in 18 league games, which ranked him sixth among players with a minimum of 20 at bats. His four home runs and .854 slugging percentage put him at the top of the heap, while the 18 runs he drove in tied him for third on the NCC hierarchy.

Tesdahl and Mossman were both quality sticks near the top of the Lynx order; they hit .356 and .339, respectively, in conference contests.

League and Class 3A state champion Clear Lake not surprisingly lead the 10-team pack with five first-team members and seven overall selections to the three teams. NCC runner-up Humboldt and Iowa Falls-Alden both collected three first-team slots.

Unanimous first-team selections included Clear Lake pitcher Jerry Kockler, catcher Rowdy Yates and outfielder Gavin Sheakley; Humboldt pitcher Ben Jacobson and infielder Austin Zylstra; Algona Bishop Garrigan pitcher Reece Wadle; and Algona catcher Tyler Frideres.

Sheakley, also a stellar pitcher for the Lions, was named the captain of the Class 3A?all-state team by the Iowa Newspaper Association today.

Clear Lake, which went 17-1 in league games, had just four seniors on its roster. Three of them - Kockler, Sheakley and infielder Luke Schiller - made the top team.

Eight of the 16 first-team award winners will return to the diamond next season.
