Cabins under construction using Iowa oak logs

Two units going up at Little Wall Lake?Park

July 17, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL?- Log cabin construction is under way at Hamilton County Conservation's Little Wall Lake Park, located just 2.5 miles south of Jewell. Construction of this new cabin is on pace to be completed in September, with the cooperation of weather. Two new cabins are being built as part of a series of future Hamilton County park cabins to come.

Modeled after the Legacy Cabin built last fall at Briggs Woods Park near Webster City, these native Iowa white oak cabins are sure to bring the same park experience with all the modern comforts and conveniences, at a great rate. The larger log cabin is similar to the Legacy Cabin, sleeping 12-15 people in three bedrooms with an extra sleeping area over the porch. The smaller log cabin sleeps 6-8 people with two bedrooms. Both cabins will be fully furnished and ADA-compliant, with a full kitchen and accessible bathrooms. Visitors will need to provide their own linens.

The building of these cabins is an effort of several partners, including Hamilton County Conservation Board, Prairie Rivers of Iowa, and Dave Scott Construction.

Guests to the cabin will be just yards away from the lake and all the amenities Little Wall Lake Park has to offer.

Mike Brandrup manages the Prairie Rivers of Iowa Log Products program, which secured the Iowa native oak logs used in these cabins and the Legacy Cabin. Brandrup said he is excited about the possibilities opened by the construction of these cabins.

"It's gratifying to see these cabins constructed with Iowa oak logs. They are examples of sustainable and environmentally-friendly building that can stand for at least 100 years."

Pricing and reservation dates will be decided at the next Hamilton County Conservation Board meeting. News, pricing, and open house information will be posted on mycountyparks.com and on Facebook at: Hamilton County Conservation Board. The cabins are expected to be open for guests starting in the fall 2013.
