WEBSTER CITY - Pitching, fielding, hitting - Clear Lake has it all.

And the full arsenal was on display last night at Lynx Field.

Behind 14 strikeouts and a four-hitter from southpaw pitcher Gavin Sheakley, the second-ranked (Class 3A) Lions wrapped up sole ownership of the North Central Conference title by knocking off Webster City, 8-1.

Clear Lake (27-3, 14-1 NCC) pounded out 10 hits, including a solo home run by Pete Swenson in the sixth inning.

"They're just really good and they're relentless," WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. "They're good enough that even when you make good pitches they still find a way to get hits and not a lot of teams have figured out how to beat them.

"We played well, just not well enough to beat the No. 2 team in the state."

Fact Box

CLEAR LAKE 8, WEBSTER CITY 1

Sheakley, who ran his record on the mound to 10-0, allowed only singles. Lynx lead-off hitter Trey Tesdahl fought off his pitches to go 3-for-4; Ben Mossman added a single.

"(Tesdahl) was seeing him well," Smock said. "The Sheakley kid is really good. He doesn't look overpowering, but he has command and control."

After spotting WCHS (7-16, 5-11 NCC) a 1-0 lead after three innings, Clear Lake went to work. The Lions scored twice in the fourth to take the lead for good and then padded on four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Daniel Halko took the loss on the hill. He allowed 10 hits in 52?3 innings; he struck out eight and walked three.

WCHS will be at home again today versus Boone.

The Lynx will travel to Eagle Grove on Wednesday and Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday.
