Doering, Hawks show grit in 6-5 win over Gilbert

June 21, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - Bret Bell doesn't hand out a Tough Man Award to his baseball players, but if he did Josh Doering would be the undoubted trophy holder.

Doering was drilled in the face with a pitch against Gilbert last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex, yet he stayed in the game and ripped a double two innings later.

It was that kind of fight Bell wanted out of his team and it paid off, as the Hawks ended a four-game slide with a 6-5 upset win over the Tigers.

"This was a very big win after a lot of close ones," Bell said. "We've been comparing everything to a fight and if we get hit in the mouth what are we going to do? (Last night) we did get hit, literally, and we punched back."

South Hamilton (5-9, 2-8 HOIC) scored five runs in the fourth to overcome a 5-1 deficit. Lane Heinlein belted a two-run single and Hunter Griffin added a run-scoring base knock in the frame. Doering earned his RBI the hard way when he took a fastball from Gilbert pitcher Wesley Greder to the face.

Devin Howard led off the first inning with a first-pitch solo home run for the Hawks.
