FORT DODGE - A long bottom of the first inning sapped the Webster City baseball team of any chance it had of pulling off an upset last night at the Rogers Sports Complex.
Tenth-ranked (Class 2A) Fort Dodge St. Edmond took advantage of three walks and back-to-back errors in its first at bat to put seven runs on the scoreboard and the Gaels never looked back in a 12-2, 5-inning North Central Conference victory.
"It was disappointing because the kids didn't bring their best and they knew it. There was nothing we needed to say to them," WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. "The last week and a half we'd been playing solid baseball, but for whatever reason we didn't have it (last night)."
St. Edmond (6-9, 3-5 NCC) tacked on two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to end it early.
WCHS (2-9, 1-5 NCC) managed just four hits - all singles - off Gael pitcher Hank Crimmins. Daniel Halko drove in the Lynx first run in the third inning on a single. Trey Tesdahl, Dylan Fielder and Cal Zahn also singled.
Alex Oswald collected an RBI in the fourth.
