JEWELL - The Relay for Life of Hamilton County 2013 will hit the road this summer, traveling to Jewell for the annual event.
The Relay is scheduled for June 28, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the South Hamilton High School Track in Jewell.
The Hamilton County Relay for Life Committee has extended an invitationtto all cancer survivors to join the Survivor Lap at the event. The Survivor's Lap immediately follows the opening ceremonies. All participating survivors who pre-register will receive a free T-shirt.
Survivors who received a registration postcard are reminded to return it to be included in the Survivor's Lap. Survivors who have not yet registered should contact Joyce Gelhaus at (515) 832-4639.
Luminaria will be lit in memory and honor of family and friends who have battled cancer. A $10 donation for each bag will help in the fight against cancer and serve as a symbol along the pathway at the Relay for Life. The names of these individuals will be read aloud in a special ceremony during the relay.
To donate a luminaria, make checks to the American Cancer Society and mail to Pat Nokes, 992 Buxton Dr.,Webster City, IA 50595. State the name and whether the luminary is in memory or in honor of the one to be remembered. Forms can be picked up at local financial institutions and mailed to Nokes. For more information, contact her at (515) 209-8083.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a community celebration where individuals and teams participate in games, theme events, and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds, while celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against the disease.
Although the main objective of relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer.
