Ryherd receives Greufe, Tolstrup awards

Jan Ryherd of Webster City has been selected to receive the Norman Greufe Memorial Scholarship and the Everett Tolstrup Scholarship.

She will attend Iowa State University to pursue a career in mass communications/journalism with a minor in business.

She is a 9 year member of the Boone Boosters 4-H Club where she has held every club office. Ryherd served on the 4-H County Council during her entire high school career and is also currently serving on the Hamilton County 4-H Youth Committee in youth adult partnerships. She had the honor to represent Hamilton County for the past two years by serving on the Iowa State 4-H Youth Council. Her experiences in this capacity have helped her develop into a dynamic ambassadors for the Hamilton County 4-H program, according to 4-H officials. She has also been instrumental as a food and nutrition junior project leader for Hamilton County, where she has served as a role model for younger 4-H'ers, sharing all the life skills developed through the 4-H program.

Ryherd said she feels that 4-H has had a big impact on her life thus far. She said that the skills and abilities she has learned will stay with her forever. According to Ryherd, these life skills have allowed her to make friends, learn new skills and explore new frontiers.

She said she has enjoyed the opportunity for leadership and learning new skills through the 4-H program and feels that by participating in 4-H activities, she has acquired critical leadership and people skills. She also said she's beginning to appreciate and understand the long term effects of 4-H in her life.

At Webster City High School, Ryherd has been active in track, student council, speech, French and science clubs, a Lynx mentor and has served on various committees.

High School academic honors include: National Honor Society, NCYL, Rotary and Kiwanis Leadership Banquets.

She is the daughter of Dan and Donna Ryherd of Webster City.
