To the Editor:
The Avenue of Flags committee of American Legion Post 191 extends its sincere appreciation for another year displaying our most beautiful American flags in Graceland Cemetery for the year of 2013.
Thanks to everyone for being soo careful as you drove through the cemetery. Damage this year involved six sections bent over, with one flag taken from its pole. Approximately 40 flags had wind shredding. The Raskas are in the process of repairing them. A very special thanks goes to Vern and Mabel.
Here are some of our thank yous with apologies to anyone we may have overlooked:
Custom Meats for continuing to provide storage for our two flag trailers; the Webster City Police Department for their escort along Beach and Ohio Streets while unloading the flags; thanks to Harold Martin and Vern Ratcliff for their golf carts guide the unloading process. Thanks to Graceland Cemetery for providing space for the trailers while the flags were on display. Thanks to Ken Christensen, Jim Burnett and Ron Keigan for pickups used to pull trailers and Harold Martin, Bob Goretska and Leo Lanctot for helping with escorts. Thanks to the Daily Freeman-Journal and KQWC for media coverage and Boy Scout Troop 17, 4-H and legionnaires and all others who helped in carrying out the details involved in this project.
A very special thanks to Lynn Jaycox for trailer remodeling. Ted Larson and the wrestling team and the middle school were absolutely magnificent as usual in helping with the flags.
There were many favorable comments this year since we left them up one whole week.
The Avenue of Flags committee had a super volunteer this year when she showed up without being asked. She helped unload and load both trailers so the AOF committee extends a hearty "Thank you" to Gretchen McGlynn (your father would be proud) for her efforts along with all the silent veterans whose names were on the flag poles throughout Graceland Cemetery.
