WCHS scratches out just 2 hits in NCC loss

CLEAR LAKE - The Webster City baseball team was unable to slow down third-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake Friday night.

The Lions won their ninth straight game, 9-0, behind a powerful performance on the hill from southpaw Gavin Sheakley. He fanned 16 Lynx batters and surrendered just two hits en route to the complete game shutout.

"(Sheakley) was outstanding," WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. "He has a real good curve and a sneaky fastball. His ball dropped pretty big and we just couldn't get comfortable at the plate."

Clear Lake (10-1, 4-0 NCC) took control with two runs in the second. The Lions put the game out of reach with a six-run fourth and added another run in the sixth.

Seth Crouthamel took the loss on the bump for WCHS (2-6, 1-3, NCC), which saw its two-game win streak halted. Crouthamel allowed just one hit and two earned runs in 32?3 innings. He struck out six, but struggled with his control and walked nine.

"I thought Seth pitched very well," Smock said. "He was going up against a top five team in the state and he kept them off balance."

Clear Lake remained at the top of the conference standings. The Lions' lone loss this season came against top-ranked (1A) Mason City Newman on May 21, but they avenged that setback nine days later by pounding the Knights, 12-2.

"They're a very good team and they're better than we are right now," Smock said of the Lions. "But our kids battled the whole game."

WCHS will travel to Humboldt today to take on the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m.
