Stuck in the middle

Peters cards 96 in final round of 2A state meet, finishes tied for 24th

MARSHALLTOWN - Uncomfortable with her swing all day, South Hamilton senior Maggie Peters didn't finish the Class 2A girls' state golf meet the way she envisioned.

But there is a bright side: She did finish her career at state.

Following an opening round 93 on Tuesday that left her in a tie for 21st, Peters posted a 96 yesterday at the par-71 American Legion Memorial Golf Course. Her 36-hole total of 189 left her in the middle of the field; she shared 24th place with Kaitlin Koob of Nashua-Plainfield (97-92-189) and Hanna Van Oosbree of Emmetsburg (98-91-189).

South Hamilton senior Maggie Peters tees off on the third hole at American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown during the Class 2A girls’ state meet on Tuesday. She finished the 36-hole event tied for 24th on Wednesday.

Peters was disappointed, but Hawks' head coach Kathi Fisher was quick to point out the obvious positives.

"She didn't think her career ended well, but I told her yes it did because she ended it at the state tournament," Fisher said. "It's not where she wanted to end up (scoring), but that's the game of golf."

Peters was forced to scramble throughout the round, and instead of giving herself makeable looks at par, she was left with one long-distance putt after another.

NOTE: Classes 3A, 4A and 5A had their second rounds postponed because of the weather on Wednesday.

She carded just three pars and again struggled on the front nine. She shot 50 on those stretch of holes both days.

"She just couldn't get kick-started and didn't give herself an opportunity to really score well," Fisher said. "She just had to scramble a lot."

Peters recorded a bogey and triple-bogey on her first two holes - the par-4 third and par-4 fourth - before righting the ship with a par at the par-4 fifth. But disaster struck three holes later when she took a quadruple-bogey snowman at the par-4 eighth.

"(Peters) went into the day wanting to shoot in the mid-80s, but it wasn't meant to be," Fisher said.

Alta-Aurelia ran away from the rest of the 2A field to claim the team title with a two-day total of 684 (339-345), a 48-stroke advantage on runner-up Dike-New Hartford (365-367-732).

Nashua-Plainfield's Sarah McMichael held on to her Day 1 lead to win the individual crown with an 81 yesterday. Her 160 was one stroke better than Dike-New Hartford's Briana Weber.

In 1A, Grundy Center ended Algona Bishop Garrigan's two-year reign. The Spartans - who last won the team crown in 2010 - held a two-stroke edge, 711 to 713.

Garrigan went home with the individual gold, as Alex Capesius turned in an even-par 71 yesterday. Her 150 was 14 strokes better than her closest competitor.

CLASS 3A/4A

AMES - Rain washed out the final day of competition at the Ames Golf and Country Club, which left Tuesday's opening round as the final say in which teams and individuals claimed victories.

Players were more than halfway through their rounds when the skies opened up and saturated the grounds too much to continue.

Carroll Kuemper (3A) and Charles City (4A) took home the team titles.

Charles City senior Jessie Sindlinger's scintillating 7-under par 65 in the opening round gave her a fourth individual championship. She became just the second female to ever win four crowns; Sharon Fladoos of Dubuque also accomplished the feat from 1958-61.

A University of Iowa recruit, Sindlinger had quite a senior year. She led the Comets to a state volleyball championship last fall and then felt the sting of disappointment in the winter when she tore her ACL during basketball.

South Tama's Paige Van Dyk (72) was the 3A medalist.

CLASS 5A

PANORA - Players never got the chance to compete at Lake Panorama National Golf Course, as rain forced the cancellation of the final round yesterday.

Waukee (325) picked up the team gold. Kelsy Shay of Waukee and Anna Cullinan of Pleasant Valley shared the top individual spot; both shot 76 on Tuesday.
