Seniors encouraged to take ‘Walk in Park’

Saturday event combines outdoor time with cleanup

The Daily Freeman Journal

Spring is here, and it is time to be outdoors enjoying nature, fresh air and sunshine. RSVP is teaming up with Webster City Parks and Recreation to encourage senior volunteers to spend time in the city's parks and trails with a young friend or relative, picking up the trash that has accumulated through the winter.

Saturday has been selected as the project day for "A Walk in the Park," and seniors and their partners will be equipped with bags, plastic gloves and pick-up sticks to clean up city property, especially the parks and trails.

"Webster City is blessed to have a number of beautiful parks and walking trails, and we want to do our part to clean them up and keep them clean for all to enjoy," said Becky Koppen, RSVP Volunteer Coordinator."

Cleaning up the parks helps give people a sense of personal investment in the area, and may encourage all involved to be more conscious of littering in the future." Volunteers may spend whatever length of time they wish on the clean-up project. An added incentive for the senior volunteers is an offer from the City of Webster City to place a monetary value on the volunteer hours spent in city property clean-up, and contribute that value towards the Webster City Community and Senior Center fund. Bags of refuse may be left at the trail or park, and will be picked up by city workers upon the volunteer's request. Anyone interested in volunteering for this project may contact Koppen at the RSVP office at 832-2525, or go to Fuller Hall, where there will be a sign-up sheet.
