JEWELL - Defending Class 2A state runner-up North Polk smacked seven hits and Comet pitchers Grant Lang and Austen Hillebo combined for 13 strikeouts in a 7-1 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival South Hamilton last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.
The Hawks collected just three hits - singles by Justin Shepherd and Lane Heinlein, and a double off the bat of Lucas Olson - but head coach Bret Bell still exited the field upbeat.
"We knew it was going to be tough, but the score doesn't show how well we played," he said. "We did a good job on the base paths and played phenomenal defense, but we're not going to win a game striking out 13 times."
Heinlein took the loss on the bump for South Hamilton (0-1).
The Hawks will travel to Eagle Grove today for a non-conference clash with the Eagles.
