WEBSTER CITY - Brenna Paukert's offense and Molly Gilbert's defense keyed the end of a six-match skid on the pitch for the Webster City girls' soccer team last night at Lynx Field.
Paukert scored a pair of goals in regulation and Gilbert collected 23 saves in goal in a 3-2 win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. The match was tied at 2 after 100 minutes - regulation and two overtime periods - but the Lynx prevailed in a shootout when Ashley Meyers and Sarah Paukert found the back of the net.
"This was just a tremendous win for the girls," WCHS head coach Greg Bock said. "We've been fighting so hard throughout the year and this was just monumental for us, especially at the end of the year.
"Molly Gilbert just played brilliantly for us in goal."
Brenna Paukert scored in the 15th minute and then again in the 70th minute off a penalty kick. Her second goal - the team-leading seventh of the season for the senior - tied the match and sent it to overtime.
WCHS will begin Class 1A regional play next Tuesday night against Gilbert on the Tigers home field at 6 p.m.
