Paukert scores early for WCHS girls, not enough in loss to Falcons

APLINGTON - Scoring early energized the Webster City girls' soccer team here yesterday evening.

It also may have angered Aplington-Parkersburg, and the Falcons spent the next 76 minutes exerting their will in a 5-1 victory over the Lynx.

Brenna Paukert gave WCHS (2-9) a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes into the match; she scored off a throw-in assist from Kennedy Daniels.

The Lynx maintained the edge until the 13th minute when Brittany Van Sickle tied it up with a rifle off the hands of goalkeeper Maia Jaycox. Stephanie Faust scored the first of her two goals a couple minutes later on a penalty kick to put A-P ahead to stay.

Dalyn Maxon and Madi Beenken added goals for the Falcons to push the cushion to 4-1, and Faust finished it off in the 76th minute with a bomb from long distance.

A-P (6-4) held a 23-5 shots on goal advantage, which was helped by the depleted Lynx roster.

WCHS lost Jaycox, as well as fellow starters Rachel Kauffman and Sarah Paukert to injury in the second half.

"Our girls played just a tenacious (match) and I was pleased with the way we played," WCHS head coach Greg Bock said. "But we were playing with a thin crew out there."

Molly Gilbert relieved Jaycox in goal in the second half and collected 14 saves.

The Lynx will be back on the pitch this evening in Boone against the Toreadors at 5:30 p.m.
