LAKE MILLS - The Northeast Hamilton girls' track team will be represented at next week's state meet by senior Jennifer Jeffers.
Jeffers won the 800-meter run at a Class 1A State Qualifying Meet last night by a comfortable margin over the rest of the field. She crossed the finish line in 2:36.82, seven seconds faster than runner-up Taylor Hauser (2:43.83) of Mason City Newman.
"She ran a beautiful race," NEH head coach Kacey Pruismann said. "She took the lead on the last curve and never looked back."
Jeffers was initially scheduled to run the open 400 as well, but strategy ultimately took her out of the field so she could concentrate on the 800.
"She had to decide at the last second if she was going to try to qualify in the 400 as well, but we mutually decided to scratch (the 400) and leave everything for the 800, and it worked out," Pruismann said.
The NEH boys' team was unable to claim an automatic berth in next week's state meet. The champion in each event qualified, and an additional 12 at-large entrants will be added today.
