WCHS boys divvy up 10 medals, 3 gold; jump up to 4th in team race

The Daily Freeman Journal

CLARION - Tony Bussan has always implored his athletes to step up when the spotlight is front and center, and they didn't disappoint him last night.

Expected to finish mid-pack or below, the Webster City boys' track team received a huge night from its relays to jump all the way up to fourth in the team standings at the North Central Conference meet. The Lynx scored 100 points and trailed third-place Iowa Falls-Alden (102) by just two points.

Algona (125) took ownership of the team title, while Fort Dodge St. Edmond (114) was the runner-up.

"The kids stepped up and honored the tradition of doing their best when it mattered the most," Bussan, the Lynx head coach, said. "Even the kids that didn't place battled, so it was a great night."

WCHS snagged 10 medals, including three gold medals, and placed in the top six 12 times in all.

Senior Boone Myers claimed the lone individual first-place finish, as he took the discus with a heave of 146 feet, 5 inches. Still recovering from a long bout of illness, Myers also won bronze in the shot put (44-4).

The relays pushed the Lynx forward though. They were first or second in six, including wins for the 4x800 (8:17.96) and 1,600 medley (3:44.75). Eric Coleman and Nick Thilges were on both winning groups; Jacob Clabaugh and Ethan Glenn completed the usual 4x800, while Nathan Nuehring and Tanner Hoveland ran the opening two legs on the medley.

Nuehring and Hoveland also had hands in the runner-up 4x100 (45.24) and 4x200 (1:34.56) relays, as did Cooper Jaycox and Cal Zahn.

Jaycox, Glenn and Zahn were all individual runners-up.

Jaycox was second in the 100 (11.31) and Glenn finished in the same spot in the open 800 (2:00.92).

Zahn and St. Edmond's Hank Lentsch both cleared 6-4 in the high jump and were forced into a jump-off situation that went late into the night. As Zahn was forced to split time between the high jump pit and the track, Lentsch eventually came out on top.

"Cal did a tremendous job and really handled being in multiple events well," Bussan said. "That's the best night of jumping he's ever had for me."

WCHS will try to keep the momentum going into Thursday's Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Nevada. Competition will start at 4 p.m.
