DES MOINES - The sun finally shined down during Thursday's second day of the Drake Relays inside Drake Stadium, but an invisible storm cloud hung over Webster City sophomore high jumper Cal Zahn.
Making his second appearance at the prestigious meet, Zahn was unable to clear the opening height of 6 feet, 1 inch and was one of three prep competitors to exit the event early.
"On all three attempts, he was just flat because the approach wasn't right, and when that's not there it's not going to be your day," WCHS head coach Tony Bussan said. "He was in the right frame of mind and he's healthy, but sometimes it's just not your day."
Zahn qualified for Drake by vaulting over 6-4 at the Lynx Invitational in Webster City earlier this month, but he couldn't recreate that magic yesterday.
Burlington Notre Dame sophomore Jeff Giannettino won the title. He cleared 6-8.
