Webster City High School students will have a chance to experience all of the glitz and glamour of the red carpet Saturday night as they arrive in fancy gowns and tuxes for the 2013 prom activities.

A Red Carpet Affair is the theme of this year's prom, according to Matt Allers, high school instructor and prom sponsor.

"And yes, there will be a red carpet for them to walk," he said.

This year's event will move to a different venue, according to Allers. While proms in recent years have been held in the middle school commons and multipurpose room, the 2013 event will be held at the high school. Allers said the dance will be held in the main lobby outside of the new competition gym. Students will begin decorating the area Friday afternoon, he said.

Parents, grandparents and community members will have an opportunity to see the students in their gowns and tuxedoes during the prom walk, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Prem Sahai Auditorium. Allers said the couples and groups of students will have a chance to cross the stage as they are introduced by Pat Powers, master of ceremonies.

"We'll have a place for a photo opp so the parents can get some pictures," he said. "We're very excited about this new element."

Those attending the prom walk are asked to enter through the doors near the main entrance of the school.

The annual spring dance doesn't just happen. The event takes nearly a whole year to plan. Allers said the students began fundraising for the prom last fall with a candy sale. Planning began over the winter.

"We got together and brainstormed themes and ideas, then came up with designs," he said. "The past month, the kids have been coming in twice a week to build things and get materials ready."

The prom begins at 9 p.m. and concludes at midnight. Students are as to enter the dance through the north doors along Bank Street.
