Howard, Twedt pocket plenty of gold; Hawks 4th at Ballard Classic

Reigning 2A state runner-up in 100 sprints into Drake Relays discussion

The Daily Freeman Journal

HUXLEY - All of the gold and the bulk of the points scored by the South Hamilton boys' track team here on Monday came from two former state place winners.

Leading is what they do best.

Devin Howard and Triston Twedt won two individual events each, and Howard added an individual silver medal as well to propel the Hawks to 84 points and a fourth-place finish in the Class B team standings at the Ballard Classic. The Hawks sat in second late in the meet, but faltered down the stretch and allowed runner-up Earlham (91) and third-place finisher Roland-Story (85) to slide on by.

Collins-Maxwell-Baxter (122.5) cruised to the team title.

"They're our leaders, the ones that we look at to score points for us," South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulson said of Howard and Twedt. "We try to put them in as many individual events as we can."

Howard - last year's Class 2A state runner-up in the 100-meter dash and fourth-place finisher in the 200 - swept the two sprints on Monday in 10.95 and 22.78 seconds, respectively. His 100 hand-held clocking - 11.19 when converted to fully automatic timing (FAT) - put him inside the discussion for a spot in the Drake Relays. He currently sits tied for 31st; the top 32 times will qualify for Drake.
