Birthdays, a break and spring

The Mommy Chronicles

March brings a whole list of special events for our family - most notably, two birthdays, a week long break from school, Easter and the arrival of spring.

My son Daniel will celebrate his 12th birthday at the end of this month. I haven't written very much about him lately because when you're in middle school, trying to make friends and remain cool, the very last thing you want is your mom writing about you in the local newspaper. That's the height of mortification; the ultimate embarrassment and one of those things that will leave a scar for life.

OK, OK, I get it. I won't reminisce or recount memories of when he was but a wee lad. I'll just say that planning a party for a 12-year-old is much more difficult and involved than arranging an event for a 5-year-old.

Just a week ahead of Daniel's birthday, my sweet little granddaughter, Ariel, will be celebrating her fourth birthday. It's hard to believe that the little bundle who arrived at Hamilton Hospital late one night, is getting ready to start school next year. She and her little brother, Eric, are really delightful little people. And no, I'm not at all biased about my grandchildren. They really are perfect.

Of course, my husband is even more smitten with the two tots. He takes great joy in using funny voices to read stories, which inevitably brings peals of laughter from the youngsters. They call him Boppa - a derivation of Grandpa.

Ariel is a very girly - loves pink and glitzy stuff and princesses; Eric is a very rough and tumble little fellow. He's crazy for footballs, soccer balls, basketballs - anything he can toss or kick. We plan to make a trip to Cedar Rapids for Ariel's birthday. And as we usually do, we'll make sure that both of the kids have some presents to open from Boppa and Gma.

Right smack dab in the middle of the month is spring break. I'm kind of surprised there a spring break this year, considering the snow days we've had. But I'm not going to complain because I see that as my opportunity to gain some cheap labor for projects around the house. I've made a deal with my son that each morning of the week, he's booked to help me. Then he can have his afternoons free to hang out with friends or do whatever. And there will be some compensation for his troubles so he'll have some walking around money for the week.

Sunday marks the return to Daylight Savings Time. I'm ecstatic about that. I like having the sunlight a little later into the evening, especially when I work most evenings. It's kind of great to walk out after a long day and see the warm glow still clinging to the sky. That also means that spring can't be far away and with that, the promise of summer returning is just a couple months.

Who isn't ready for a little warmth and sunshine?
