ELLSWORTH?- When the City Council in Ellsworth met for its regular monthly session on Feb. 11, it considered several requests for funding.
Two requests were for summer sports programs for area youth. This year's T-ball program, for children entering kindergarten this fall through second grade, was approved for funding from the city, as was this summer's Little League program. Boys in third grade through eighth grade can participate. Councilmen unanimously approved donating $500 to the T-ball program and $1,000 to the Little League program. The funding will come from the town's Bingo fund.
Another funding request considered was from the South Hamilton Post Prom Committee. The council approved the request for $500, to come from Bingo funds.
In other business, councilmen discussed a contract providing for fire protection services for rural property. The contract states that the city will provide the protection for the townships and the townships will levy a tax for its share of fire equipment, maintenance, replacement, and all other necessary costs for this service. The council directed city Clerk Kathy Eittreim to send the contract to the six townships served by the Ellsworth volunteer fire department.
After reviewing proposed budget figures for FY14, the council set the public hearing to adopt the FY14 Ellsworth budget at the March council meeting.
