Public hearing on budget set for Stanhope

STANHOPE -The Stanhope City Council dispensed with its agenda in just 45 minutes at its monthly session last week.

A resolution was passed that set the public hearing for the 2013-14 operating budget for 6:30 p.m. on March 11, during the March City Council meeting.

Other business on the brief agenda was concerned with the electric utility wholesale electric contract. A consulting firm from Lincoln, Nebraska has been engaged to prepare a request for proposal for wholesale electricity beginning January 1, 2014. Requests were sent to 12 companies.

After receiving all proposals, the consulting firm recommended that the city select heartland Consumers Power District of Madison, South Dakota to provide electrical energy for ten years. Heartland will supply technical assistance and financial assistance, with the possible construction of a new power substation and system conversion.

Plans are to review the report from the consulting firm, with further discussions to take place before a contract is signed. At the March City Council meeting, the clerk will seek authority to begin negotiations with Heartland on wholesale power cost and financing proposals.

City Clerk Ron McKenzie detailed the 2013-14 operating budget for the council before the meeting adjourned.
