Lynx drop nail-biter to Bulldogs, finish 9-9 in NCC

February 13, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

ALGONA - Trailing 49-41 with 3 minutes left in regulation, the Webster City boys' basketball team refused to pack it in here last night.

But the Lynx furious rally fell frustratingly short.

After watching WCHS go on an 11-2 run to take a 52-51 lead late, Algona remained calm and sank several clutch free throws in the waning moments to come out on top, 56-54, in the North Central Conference tug of war.

Down two points with 2 seconds left on the clock, the Lynx (9-11, 9-9 NCC) needed to go the full length of the court and hit a miracle shot, but their long pass to near midcourt was errant and it allowed Algona (8-13, 8-10 NCC) to breathe again.

"It's disappointing because defensively we didn't play as well as we needed to," WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. "Our guys hung in there; they really battled back and put us in position to win the game, but we just didn't make enough of the little plays to win a game like this."

It was a reversal of fortune from the first meeting - a 42-41 Lynx win in Webster City on Jan. 11 in which the Bulldogs had a shot at the buzzer to win, but came up short.
