DES MOINES - The Daily Freeman-Journal brought home five first place honors from the Iowa Newspaper Foundation's Better Newspaper Contest. The competition, held annually, honors Iowa daily and weekly newspapers for excellence in a variety of categories.
The awards were presented at a banquet in Des Moines Friday night which capped off the two-day Iowa Newspaper Association convention.
The Daily Freeman-Journal news staff took first place honors for Class 1 Dailies for Best Coverage of Business. The staff also took second place honors for its online slideshow of RAGBRAI photos.
Daily Freeman-Journal Sport Editor Troy Banning, Advertising Manager Cory Bargfrede and Managing Editor Anne Blankenship, display the first plaques received by the newspaper at the Iowa Newspaper Association annual awards banquet held Friday in Des Moines.
Sports Editor Troy Banning was named Best Sports Columnist for Class 1 Daily newspapers. He also won first and third place in the Best Sports Story category. Banning won for his profile of mixed martial artist Michael McBride in a story entitled, "Caged." The third place story was entitled "A Call to the Hall." Banning also received a second place award in the Best Sports Pages category.
The Daily Freeman-Journal advertising department also brought home two first place honors for Best Ad featuring Miscellaneous for Ladies Night Out and Best Ad Web Advertisement for The Grid Iron.
The advertising staff also took second place honors for Best Community Promotion or event for its "Welcome to Webster City" RAGBRAI publication. The staff took third place in the Best Automotive Ad.
