Hawks frigid from field, fall to Gilbert

GILBERT - The frustration was evident on John Hegland's face each and every time he put his head down and charged the basket.

Some of his shots looked good, but they just wouldn't fall. Other times he drew the attention of two or three defenders and didn't even have the chance to let it fly before the ball was slapped out of his hands.

Yep, it was that kind of night.

Hegland, a South Hamilton senior and the No. 2 scorer in the Heart of Iowa Conference, poured in 17 points, but he needed 18 shots and seven free throws to get there Friday night in the Hawks 61-50 loss to league rival Gilbert.

Hegland wasn't alone though. The entire South Hamilton team struggled at the offensive end, as the Hawks made good on just 37 percent (19 of 51) of their field goal attempts, including 24 percent (4 of 17) from behind the 3-point arc.

They were a dismal 2 of 15 from long distance until Lucas Olson drained back-to-back 3s with under two minutes remaining.

"I think the players came out with good energy. Unfortunately, our shots weren't falling," South Hamilton head coach B.J. Terrones said after suffering his first loss against the program he led to its one and only state tournament appearance in 1995. "We shoot a normal percentage and we're right there in the game."

The invisible blockade on the basket stayed in place on free throws as well; the Hawks - a 65 percent free-throw shooting team - made just 8 of 19 attempts (42 percent).

Gilbert (9-8, 9-6 HOIC) took control with a 10-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters. The Tigers rained in four 3-pointers in the opening half and then spent the 16 minutes after intermission going to the basket for easy looks.

"They've had some games where they've really lit it up (from the outside)," Terrones said. "We wanted to make sure that we closed out, but unfortunately after we closed out on the shooter we weren't able to cover when they decided to drive."

Gilbert reeled off eight straight points in the third quarter to take its biggest lead of the game at 42-29.

South Hamilton (11-7, 10-5 HOIC) closed to within eight on the second of Olson's 3s and had a chance to trim it to five in the final minute, but Andrew Wintermote's 3 from the corner circled the iron before falling off.

Matt Hislop and Josh Doering added 15 and 10 points, respectively, in the loss. Justin Shepherd had just two points, but he did everything else with seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Jared Gescheidler led Gilbert with 19 points; 12 came during a second-half surge. Michael Austin chipped in 11 points from the paint.

The two teams played under the Coaches vs. Cancer banner and raised $6,135.28 for Children's Cancer Connection. Novelty items such as a Paul Rhoads autographed football and a Fred Hoiberg signed basketball were raffled off.

Hawks rebound vs. Tigers

JEWELL - South Hamilton forced 15 second-half turnovers and outscored South Hardin 37-21 during that span to pull away for a 69-50 non-conference victory Saturday night.

Hegland led three Hawks in double figures with 20 points. Olson and Trevor Ullestad both dumped in 10.

The Hawks knocked down seven 3s; Ullestad, Olson and Shepherd all made two.

Bryce Zeiseiness went off for 25 points for South Hardin (5-12).
