Trojets escape with narrow win over CAL

January 16, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

LATIMER - Defense carried the Northeast Hamilton girls' basketball team to a closer-than-expected 31-28 victory over Iowa Star Conference rival CAL here last night.

Winners by 31 points (59-28) the first time they played CAL back on Nov. 27, the Trojets never had the opportunity to pull away. Still, head coach Bret Schutt says any win is a reason to celebrate.

"It was a rough offensive night, but our defense really carried us through," he said. "It was a tough, grind-it-out win, but it was a win, so we're happy."

NEH (4-10, 3-8 ISC), which has won two of its last three, led by a point at halftime (16-15) and by four after three quarters (23-19).

Molly Greenfield scored eight of her team-high 10 points at the free throw line for the Trojets. Jenn Willems pitched in seven points and Kaylee Massman added four.

CAL (1-12, 0-11 ISC) received a game-high 18 points from Karter Miller.
