Rough outing defensively sends Lynx boys to NCC loss

January 16, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

CLEAR LAKE - Marty McKinney coached basketball teams just don't give up 73 points.

Actually ...

The Webster City boys' basketball coach was noticeably irritated last night following his squad's 73-60 loss to North Central Conference rival Clear Lake. The Lynx were out-rebounded 26-12 and allowed the Lions to score at will from close range in the setback.

"You're going to get beat when you give up 73 points, it's that simple," McKinney said. "We've taken a lot of pride in our defense in the five or six years that I've coached and we knew that we'd probably give up some more points than usual this year, but this is not what we had in mind."

Pete Swenson had a career night for Clear Lake (8-3, 7-3 NCC) with 26 points - 16 above his season average - and he also one-upped WCHS all by himself on the glass with 13 boards.

"You have to give (Swenson) credit because he played with a ton of heart," McKinney said. "I think he had six offensive rebounds ... he wanted it. He played with passion and he got after it."
