Nevada pressures Hawk girls into submission

Detrick scores 12 points, collects five steals in loss

JEWELL - Trying to get the ball up court was as painful as a double root canal, and good looks at the basket were as common as frostbite in July for the South Hamilton girls' basketball team last night on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

Nevada was the dentist. And the Cubs don't believe in novocaine.

Twice-beaten Nevada's in-your-face, man-to-man defense from one end of the court to the other took its toll on South Hamilton, as the Cubs forced 26 turnovers and turned them into piles of points in a 60-33 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

Still, it was an improvement for South Hamilton, who dropped its first contest against Nevada, 64-6, back on Nov. 27.

"That first time was very embarrassing and I think the kids remembered that," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "It gave the kids some motivation this week and I was happy with how we played (last night). They didn't give up all night."

The three-headed monster of Jessica Helton (15 points), Kati Cassabaum (13) and Allison Fey (12) all scored in double figures for Nevada (10-2, 8-2 HOIC). Fey did the majority of her damage in the second quarter; she rained in a pair of 3-pointers and notched eight points during the stretch.

South Hamilton (1-10, 1-9 HOIC) - losers of six straight - made a push in the opening 2 minutes of the third quarter on a bucket inside by Savana Stangeland and a 3-pointer from the wing by Mattea Detrick, but back-to-back turnovers led to four points for Nevada moments later and the Cubs were never threatened again.

Nevada upped its advantage to 45-24 after three quarters.

"I was very happy with how we broke (the press) and how we handled it mentally and physically," Fisher said. "That didn't hurt us as much as when we broke it and then we started making bad choices."

Detrick, the Hawks' point guard who took her share of lumps breaking the press, knocked down a pair of 3s and scored a team-best 14 points - 10 coming in the second half. She also collected five of South Hamilton's 15 steals.

Ella Jans chipped in six points and six rebounds. Sarah Rudy finished with four points, four steals and three assists, and Stangeland produced four points and four boards.
