North Polk all over SH girls in HOIC mismatch

January 7, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - Fast, athletic and always attacking, the North Polk girls' basketball team put its best attributes on display for a large crowd to see here Friday night.

As South Hamilton celebrated 50 Years of Basketball and honored its 1965 girls' state championship team, the Comets showed they have the goods in 2013 with a 60-25 thumping of the Hawks in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

The visitors limited South Hamilton to just a single point in the first quarter on a free throw by Kaitlin Fisher and built a 17-1 lead en route to the 35-point win. The Hawks trailed by as many as 40 before outscoring North Polk 9-4 over the final 8 minutes of action.

"They just played really aggressive defense and used their athletic ability to stress us," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "They're tall, they're fast and they're just very aggressive, and they play with a lot of confidence.

"I was a little disappointed that what we worked on in practice didn't carry over to the game, but good teams make you do that."

Megan Murphy canned three 3-pointers and notched a game-high 21 points for North Polk (9-1, 8-1 HOIC), which finished off a two-game season sweep against South Hamilton (1-9, 1-8 HOIC). Miranda Murphy was right on her teammate's heels with 19.
