Hawk girls fall to Tigers, Gaels; sit at 1-7

December 17, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - The South Hamilton girls' basketball team continued to search for answers over the weekend with back-to-back losses on Friday and Saturday.

Gilbert outscored the Hawks 16-4 in the second quarter on Friday to jump ahead to stay in a 47-37 Heart of Iowa Conference victory. On Saturday, Fort Dodge St. Edmond opened the non-conference tilt on a 15-0 spurt and was never threatened in a 64-38 rout.

South Hamilton sits at 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the HOIC.

Turnovers plagued the Hawks in both contests, particularly on Saturday when the Gaels forced 37.

"Turnovers are the problem right now," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "We stress our passing, but for some reason we still have trouble focusing and making strong passes. And I feel like I'm a broken record, but (the players) have to go out onto the court feeling like they can win."

Kaitlin Fisher led South Hamilton in the loss to Gilbert (6-4, 6-1 HOIC) with 11 points and eight rebounds. Mattea Detrick and Ella Jans both scored seven points; Jans collected seven boards, and Detrick registered four steals and three assists.
