JEWELL - For maybe the first time in his life, B.J. Terrones was happy to see Gilbert lose here Friday night.
Now the boys' basketball coach at South Hamilton, Terrones guided his Hawks to a 58-46 victory over his alma mater in Heart of Iowa Conference action - the school he helped lead to its only state tournament appearance in 1995.
"I don't know if there's a word for how it felt," Terrones said after the win. "Some of the seniors over there (on the Gilbert team), I had them a couple of years ago, so it's kind of strange where the path takes you."
John Hegland scored 18 points, and Andrew Wintermote and Matt Hislop both had 12, as South Hamilton (4-2 HOIC) won its third straight game. Hegland missed much of the first half with foul troubles, but he caught fire in the second half and helped the Hawks outscore Gilbert (3-3, 3-3 HOIC) 33-15.
Hegland was 10 of 11 from the free throw line; he currently leads Class 2A in free throw attempts this season with 64 - an average of nine per game.
Thomas Pollard and Jared Gescheidler both scored 12 points for Gilbert; they combined to bury seven of the Tigers' nine 3-point field goals.

St. Edmond takes down Hawks
FORT DODGE - South Hamilton's three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Saturday, as defending 2A state runner-up Fort Dodge St. Edmond took an early lead and never relented in a 57-40 victory.
The Gaels (5-2) outscored the Hawks (4-2) 15-5 in the second quarter and then used a 10-0 spurt in the third period to build their lead to as many as 22.
Robbie Burke, a 6-foot-6 junior center, controlled the middle for St. Edmond, as he connected on 9 of 13 shots and notched a game-high 23 points. He also helped to limit Hegland to just eight points; it was the first time the senior forward has failed to reach double figures this season.
Aaron Chalstrom drained three 3-pointers for nine points, and Alex Mericle also had nine for the Gaels.
Lucas Olson came off the Hawks' bench to bury three triples en route to a team-high nine points.
