Children who visited the Grid Iron Sports Bar and Grill last Monday night had more than just a good meal. They had a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a gift to take home with them.
This is the fourth year that the Webster City restaurant has sponsored the Supper with Santa events. This year, the suppers were planned for Dec. 10 and next Monday, Dec. 17.
The whole program started kind of by accident, according to owner, Burke Risetter.
Jaycee Caudle, 5, sits on Santa’s lap at the Supper with Santa event held at the Grid Iron Sports Bar and Grill last Monday night. Santa will be back Monday night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for another dinner session.
"We invited Santa out on Kids Night to visit with the kids," he said. They added cookie and candy cane treats, and later started giving the children small gifts. Risetter said that first year, he had the impression that the gifts given at the restaurant might be the only ones some of the children received. Today, through some anonymous donors, the restaurant is offering wrapped toy for the boys and girls to take home.
"By the second year, we were more organized," Risetter said. The Grid Iron has a weekly Monday night event where kids 10 and younger can eat for free with their parents. That seemed like a natural time to have the Jolly Old Elf arrive with a bag of presents.
Risetter said many of his food suppliers jumped on board and helped with donations and some of the restaurant's patrons have also provided donations. Last Monday, there were about 75 children given gifts, he said.
"We had a large crowd that night," he said. "The looks on the kids' faces are just priceless. The kids have so much fun and we look forward to the event each year."
Santa will be back at the Grid Iron Monday night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Risetter said reservations are welcomed.
