The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - John Hegland was again the leading man and Justin Shepherd stepped up in a supporting role to help the South Hamilton boys' basketball team push its record back to even here Friday night.

Hegland, a senior forward, continued to prove himself as one of the most prolific scorers in the state, as he popped off for 28 points in a 62-54 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Colfax-Mingo.

Averaging 25.0 points per game this season - the fourth-best mark in Class 2A - Hegland knocked down 9 of 17 shots from the field and 9 of 11 free throws. In his last three games, he's averaged 30 points while shooting 68 percent. He's also gone to the charity stripe an average of 14 times and connected on 77 percent of his attempts.

"I think he's capable of continuing to do this all year long against any opponent that we play," South Hamilton head coach B.J. Terrones said of Hegland, who completed the double-double with 14 rebounds on Friday. "He's doing a real good job with shot selection and the best thing he's doing is getting to the foul line a lot."

Shepherd banged in three 3-point buckets on his way to 17 points; he added five steals, four boards and three assists.

"Justin is taking open shots and (Friday) night they were falling," Terrones said. "He's another one of those guys that as he goes, so does our offense."
