JEWELL - It took a balanced effort, not to mention a momentum-building third quarter spurt, to get the South Hamilton girls' basketball team over the hump on Jim Marsh Court Friday evening.
Clinging to an 18-16 halftime lead, the Hawks went on a 21-10 run in the 8 minutes following intermission to pull away from Colfax-Mingo in a 48-36 victory in Heart of Iowa Conference action.
It was South Hamilton's first victory, and it came on the strength of 17 assists on 20 field goals. Sarah Rudy dished out five, while Kaitlin Fisher and Mattea Detrick both distributed four.

South Hamilton forward Savana Stangeland goes up in a crowd as Colfax-Mingo’s Nicolette Husson (33) attempts to block her shot on Friday in Jewell. The Hawks claimed their first win of the season, 48-36.
"It wasn't a one-person show. We had a lot of nice balance," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "A lot of girls had very big baskets at key points in the game and the hoop got suddenly larger for us, which is a good thing."
The third-quarter surge came in the nick of time, as the Hawks (1-4, 1-4 HOIC) had to fend off a 26-point effort from Colfax-Mingo (1-5, 1-5 HOIC) forward Nicolette Husson.
"They came out of the half determined to finish. They cranked it up on defense and that gave them confidence on offense," Fisher said of her players. "(Husson) had a very good game. She had a nice quick move to the middle and we just didn't quite match up with her."
