Turnover-prone SH girls fall to Eagles by 12; Jans scores 11 to lead

The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - A slew of unforced turnovers put the South Hamilton girls' basketball team behind the 8-ball here on Friday, as the Hawks were unable to pull out their first victory of the season.

Saydel took the lead early on and never relinquished it in a 58-46 conquest of the Hawks in Heart of Iowa Conference play. South Hamilton (0-3, 0-3 HOIC) piled up 27 turnovers in the contest.

"The turnovers are our Achilles Heel right now and a lot of them were unforced," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. "It was just trying to maybe do a little bit too much, but we just have to keep trying to build on the positives and there were a lot of those."

South Hamilton guard Kaitlin Fisher (00) looks to connect from long range on Friday against Saydel in Jewell. She scored seven points in the Hawks’ 58-46 loss.

Offensively it was a gigantic leap in the right direction for the Hawks, who mustered just six points in a loss to Nevada last Tuesday. Five players scored more than that on Friday.

"Offensively we looked to score more than we did against Nevada," Fisher said. "We're making progress; we just have to be patient."

Ella Jans led the Hawks with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Savana Stangeland had a strong performance as well with nine points and nine boards. South Hamilton held a 29-27 edge on the glass.
