‘Get Hire-Ability’ session set for Tuesday

Event will strive to help job seekers better market themselves to employers

Interviewing for a job is hard work; so is writing a resume and knowing exactly what employers really want from potential employees.

To help people improve their chances at landing a job - or moving up to a better job - area providers are sponsoring "Get Hire-Ability," an event that features local employers, human resource professionals and breakout sessions from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Webster City.

Everything is being offered with the goal of helping people better market themselves to employers.

Although the event is scheduled on the heels of an announcement by Electrolux last week that it is moving 80 jobs out of Webster City next year, "Get Hire-Ability" has been in the works for a couple of months, according to Cindy Schieber, assistant director of the North Central Iowa Small Business Development Center in Fort Dodge.

It was planned partly as a result of the closing of the main Electrolux plant in 2011, Schieber said, since people who lost their jobs then and went back to school to train for new careers are probably just now ready to jump back into the job market.

"We want to help them fine tune ... and make themselves as attractive as possible to employers," she said.

Some of the participating employers may be looking for workers now or in the future, but their main purpose in being part of Tuesday's event is to help job seekers practice the skills they need to market themselves, in part, through mock interviews and resume critiques.

IowaWorks, Webster City Economic Development, Hamilton County S.E.E.D., Iowa Central Community College and ISU Extension and Outreach are making the event as accessible as possible. Registration isn't required, there is no cost to participate, and it was set up so people who aren't available during the day can still take part.

Although it's a four-hour event, "it's come and go," Schieber said. "The work stations will be available the whole time" for mock interviews and resume critiques in little rooms, but the breakout sessions are repeated twice.

For those who have resumes, she said, it's recommended they bring theirs but having a resume isn't a requirement.

Among those who will provide advice will be representatives from Swine Graphics and Seneca Foundry on the employment side, and Sarah Kopriva, owner of R Company, a Webster City clothing store, and Tina Poland, owner of phairytales salon, for some of the breakout sessions, said Catherine Bergman, of Hamilton County S.E.E.D.

"We feel there is a great need for resume and interview skills, and the Hamilton County region certainly has people looking for jobs," Bergman said.

"Get Hire-Ability" isn't restricted to Hamilton County residents or to former Electrolux workers, she said.

"While we intended to target Electrolux employees, as we started to put all the details together ... we realized the information is applicable to anyone, no matter what position you hold," she said.

Some of the information should also be beneficial to those "who aren't thinking about going anywhere," Bergman added.
